about me

Hi! I'm Shawn and I'm an undergraduate senior at the University of California San Diego. I am scheduled to graduate in June of 2021, with a degree in Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics-Computer Science. I was a full-time software engineer intern at NAVSEA Corona Division in Fallbrook in the summer of 2019. Recently, I've accepted an offer for a full-time software engineer position with Walmart and I am heading to Seattle, Washington after graduation. work experience

Software Engineer Intern

Summer 2019

At NAVSEA Corona Division's detachment in Fallbrook, I worked on developing a control system software for the United States Marine Corps' small arms testing environment. The software I developed not only allows the user to change the configuration for the testing environment remotely, but it also performs automatic calibration among the pieces of machinery within the testing environment, which eliminates manual tasks of the test environment operators when it comes to configuration. You can read more about it by clicking here.

education

B.S in Mathematics-Computer Science

Class of 2021

As a mathematics-computer science major at UCSD, I had the chance to take some of the most crucial courses at the highest level, offered by their mathematics and computer science departments. Some of my favorite courses include discrete mathematics, where I learned to prove statements using mathematical logics, algorithms, where I learned to approach problems like a computer scientist, and data structures, where I learned about the application of data structures in the industry.

technical skills

Programming languages: Python, Java, C++, HTML, CSS, javaScript, Swift, Matlab, Haskell
Frameworks and libraries: Bootstrap, node.js
Additionally: Currently teaching myself full-stack web development that includes react.js, Restful API, Express, SQL and more

personal values

Values I firmly believe in are gratitude, work ethic, respect, discipline, perseverance, and family. I was raised by my single mother, whom I love, respect, and admire. Growing up, she emphasized how we should always be grateful for what we have since there are people who are worse off than we are, or for we are not worse off. She is the most selfless, resilient, and hardworking person with integrity I have seen in my life. What she also taught me was love and appreciation for family. Although our family didn't have much wealth, it helped me to realize all the sacrifices my mother had made and how much effort she gave, which I learned to appreciate dearly.

Inspired by my mother's hard work, I was determined to emulate her. I've been working through school since I had graduated high school (with an exception of 2020 due to COVID-19) After gaining work experience outside of school and profession, what life taught me is that I am not entitled, nothing will come to me if I do not put in the work hard and adapt to changes. I have to constantly challenge myself to learn new things, set the bar higher to be a better person each day. I must be productive, self-reliant, self-sufficient, accountable, and must treat everyone with respect, as to how I want to be treated. I also believe that I must think and act rationally rather than being impulsive and being lack of discipline, to succeed in life.
